ATEX certification – safety in accordance with European standards
ATEX is the abbreviation of the French term ATmosphères EXplosibles and refers to European certification in accordance with the applicable ATEX directive of the European Union. This directive regulates the basic requirements for equipment and protective systems for use in potentially explosive atmospheres and ensures that risks posed by gases, vapours, mists or dusts are effectively minimised.
IECEx certification – international recognition
IECEx certification is an internationally recognised certification procedure outside Europe and the USA. It is based on the standards of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) and enables certified products to be used worldwide. The zone classification largely corresponds to the ATEX system, with zones 0/20 and 1/21 being combined.
ATEX zone classification – overview of areas of application
Areas at risk of explosion are divided into different zones depending on the frequency of occurrence of an explosive atmosphere:
- Zone 0 / Zone 20
There is a constant or long-term risk of explosion due to gases, vapours, mists or dusts. - Zone 1 / Zone 21
An explosive atmosphere occurs occasionally. - Zone 2 / Zone 22
An explosive atmosphere occurs rarely or only for a short time.
This zone classification forms the basis for the selection of suitable luminaires and protective measures.
